Our adult classes are taught in a series of 8-week, 1-hour classes, and are recommended for students age 14 and up.
The beginning class is held on Thursdays and is recommended to those new to the sport. Beginning students generally require more than one pass through the beginning class in order to master the fundamentals. The intermediate class is held on Tuesdays and is tailored for those who have completed beginning instruction and have received approval from the beginning coach to move forward. Adult classes are $180 for the 8-week class and membership is not included in class fees.

Adult, Beginning Foil
The instructor will introduce the basic concepts of modern fencing and explain the differences between the three weapons early in the class, but the focus of the class will be on the uniqueness of modern foil fencing. Students will learn footwork, how to hold the weapon, and simple attacks and defense. All equipment for the class is provided, including foils. Students must wear sweatpants that cover the legs all the way to the ankle for safety and are encouraged to bring a water bottle, though a water fountain is available on site. This is an active class, so be prepared to sweat a little. Every level of fitness is encouraged to attend and the instructors will do their best to make sure that everyone is accommodated. Our goal is for you to love the sport of fencing as much as we do by the end of your first class!
Adult, Intermediate Foil
For students who have completed the beginning class or who come to West Berkeley with prior fencing experience, the intermediate class introduces advanced tactics for foil fencing and allows students to practice with drills and guided/themed bouting. As with the beginning class, all equipment is provided, including foils. Students are required to wear sweatpants that cover the legs. Students are encouraged to continue their fencing after class with classmates and other fencers at the club.
